All the national conferences have been held at different locations across India and have engaged with current issues in public discourse such as women’s struggles for survival, economic policy, religion and culture, democracy, and citizenship (Box 2). The Conferences have also recognised that apart from academic discussions and the sharing of publications and information (including grey literature), an important aspect of women’s expression and knowledge production is reflected in visual, aural and performative modes of communication. Therefore, IAWS conferences attempt to balance the structured intellectual discussions with cultural events and exhibits that foreground other ways of knowing through film screenings, exhibitions, drama, music and craft. The workshops and conferences have energised and reinforced the network by bringing established scholars, activists and young students together in stimulating interchanges..
